Chapter Scholarships (Southeastern inductees and students)
In commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of Southeastern Louisiana Chapter 075, the Phi Kappa Phi Endowed Scholarship was established. The purpose of the scholarship is to provide financial support to a deserving student who is attending Southeastern Louisiana University and is a member of the Southeastern Chapter of Phi Kappa Phi. In 2008, the scholarship was renamed in honor of long-time member and officer Lou Ballard. Ms Ballard passed away in the spring of 2009. This established a tradition of naming endowed scholarships for those who had a special commitment to Southeastern’s chapter of Phi Kappa Phi.
Phi Kappa Phi Lou Ballard Endowed Scholarship
The scholarship was established during the organization’s 50th anniversary in 2005, and is for an active member of the chapter. Lou Ballard, for whom the scholarship is named, was its longtime secretary and by whom the history of the Southeastern chapter of Phi Kappa Phi, “Our history…Our Legacy” was written. She is also remembered as an emeritus professor of English at Southeastern.
Henry Earl and Carol Corkern Endowed Scholarship
In 2018, we initiated the Earl and Carole Corkern Scholarship. Dr. and Mrs. Corkern were long-time members and officers of our chapter, and we appreciate their generosity. Earl Corkern ‘54 was a Professor Emeritus of Mathematics at Southeastern and member of Phi Kappa Phi. His wife, Carol Farlow Corkern ‘56 established the scholarship and retired from teaching at the Southeastern Lab School. The scholarship benefits a student who has junior status and is a member of the Phi Kappa Phi honor society.
The Joan Faust Memorial Scholarship
The Joan Faust Memorial Scholarship was founded in 2022. It is the third chapter scholarship offered through Phi Kappa Phi and was created by her family to honor the memory of long-serving Southeastern English professor and Phi Kappa Phi Chapter 75 Secretary Joan Faust. The annual Homecoming Quiz Bowl is also named in her honor in appreciation for the dedication she had for the event, even after her retirement from Southeastern.
Students will visit selu.academicworks.com to fill out a general application. When you select you are a member, it will give you a conditional application for Phi Kappa Phi.
The scholarship recipients will be announced during the Phi Kappa Phi Spring Induction Ceremony. The scholarships will be awarded on a semester-by-semester basis, $500 per semester. The recipient may retain the scholarship for two semesters provided he or she continues to meet the selection criteria.
